Created by Walter De Maria in 1977 and situated in a remote area of the desert of New Mexico, this work is comprised of 400 polished stainless steel poles installed in a grid array measuring one mile by one kilometer. Each pole is 20 feet high and they are spaced 220 feet apart. When electrical storms pass overhead, the poles act at conductors attracting the lightning to them. The site can be visited and is about 3 hours drive from Albuquerque. |
