La MoliereLa Moliere is a beautifully renovated farmhouse located near the popular village of Saignon in the Luberon National Park in Provence.  It is about 40 mins drive from Aix-en-Provence and the ancient city of Avignon, and about 90 mins from Marseille.

The property is situated in 20 hectares (approx 50 acres) of grounds with extensive panoramic views across the open countryside.  Mont Ventoux, the “Giant of Provence” that has been frequently included in the Tour de France, is an hours drive away, but can be clearly seen from the house and garden.

La MoliereThe house has been lovingly renovated to a very high standard by the present owners.  As can be seen from the pictures, it is both beautiful and simple – the sort of simplicity that takes great care and attention!  For instance, much of the interior of the house has been finished using natural chalk tinted by ocres which comes from the nearby village of Roussillon near Gordes

The house comfortably sleeps up to 12 people and is an ideal destination for a well-being break.  Every room has been created individually, each with a wonderfully rustic and dreamy feel.  There is a large swimming pool in the grounds with several beautiful terraces and a courtyard in which to relax.

La MoliereThe farmhouse is just outside Saignon, which sits on a magnificent escarpment, with a cluster of fine buildings under the crags, and a ruined castle.  The main local larger town is Apt, 4 km away, which is an ancient Roman city (previously called Apta Julia) and is the main town of the northern Luberon.  Its Saturday market is one of the best in Provence where you can find Provencal fabrics and pottery, tempting fruit, goat’s cheeses, sausages, olives, etc, and its main church is said to hold relics of St Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary.  Slightly further to the west is Cavaillon which is the melon capital of France, producing huge amounts of delicious cantaloupes.  It also has one of France’s most important wholesale fruit and vegetable markets.

La MoliereThe Cistercian Abbey de Sananque is about 25 km away.  This is one of the most photogenic abbeys in France due to the fields of lavender which surround it.  There are several other important abbeys in the area and numerous other historical sites.

The Luberon region of Provence was made famous in the early 1990s in England due to the best selling book by Peter Mayle, “A Year in Provence”.  This was set in the village of Menerbes, 15 km west of our holiday location.  Much of the Luberon is protected within a regional park that stretched from Cavaillon in the west to Manosque in the east, taking in some of the most popular tourist spots such as Gordes and Roussillon on the Plateau de Vancluse, as well as the main mountain ridges.

La MoliereThe Luberon offers plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling, riding and rock-climbing and is crossed by many major long-distance trails (the GR4, GR6 and GR9).  There is canoeing, kayaking and white-water rafting - you can even bungee jump from many of the bridges in the deepest gorges.
