Le Chateau de Rodie is an ancient fortress dating from the 13th Century that is now an organic farm set in 134 acres of private nature reserve in an unspoilt valley. After a lengthy restoration, the Chateau is now a comfortable home with large bedrooms, spacious sitting rooms, antique furniture, stone walls and beamed ceilings. The farm specialises in the preservation of rare domestic breeds, especially the ancient Landais breed of sheep.
It lies about 20km from the towns of Villeneuve-sur-Lot and Cahors close to the River Lot, and is a short drive from the extraordinary village of Rocamadour and the caves at Gouffre de Padirac.
Slightly further a field is the southern Dordogne region and the wine growing areas of Bordeaux
The Chateau is a heavily fortified stone building and is arranged around a central courtyard. This courtyard is used for dining out (weather permitting) under the arches of the gallery. At other times, food is taken in the Grand Salle. There are around 10 bedrooms, some of which have their own distinct themes. Several of the bedrooms are located in the three towers and all have en suite facilities.
There is a large swimming pool to the side of the chateau and guests are free to wander around the
extensive meadows and woodlands. The grounds contain a remarkable variety of rare wild plants (such as orchids), butterflies and birds (including many birds of prey).
The local town of Villeneuve-sur-Lot, 20km to the west, retains its original town plan dating from 1253. On Wednesdays, the oldest organic market outside Paris is held here. To the east, the town of Cahors has one of the region’s most famous landmarks, the Pont Valentre, a fortress bridge dating from the 14th century.
Rocamadour, 40km away, is France’s second most visited place of pilgrimage and is one of the most extraordinarily sited place sin France, its many sanctuaries being built on the side of a cliff. Gouffe de Padirac, close to Rocamadour, is one of the largest cave complexes in the region.
The area offers ample opportunity for walking, cycling, horse back riding, or water sports nearby.
